Carlo Sand Blow with Kids: Your Family Adventure Guide

Picture this: Your kids burst through the rainforest and stop dead in their tracks. In front of them stretches a massive golden desert – 15 hectares of windswept sand dunes that look like they belong in the Sahara, not perched above Rainbow Beach. Beyond the sand, K’gari (Fraser Island) shimmers on the horizon to the north.

This is Carlo Sand Blow, and it’s one of the most unique natural attractions in Queensland. It’s the kind of place where kids forget their screens exist and just run, explore, and slide down enormous dunes on boogie boards.

We’ve visited with our four kids, and it quickly became one of our favorite family memories from the Gympie region. Here’s how to make the most of your visit.

Amazing views from the Carlo Sand Blow in Rainbow Beach

  • The walk: 600m scenic rainforest trail, 10-15 mins (mostly uphill on the way in, downhill coming back!)
  • Best time: Early morning (7-9am) before it gets too hot
  • What to bring: Boogie boards, water, sunscreen, hats, snacks
  • Facilities: None at the sand blow – use toilets before you leave Rainbow Beach
  • Parking: Limited – arrive early or park on roadside down the hill
  • Cost: FREE
  • Perfect for: All ages – brilliant for tiring out energetic kids!
  • Pram friendly? No, please pack a baby carrier!

IMPORTANT: Getting There – Don’t Make This GPS Mistake!

Critical navigation tip: When using Google Maps, DO NOT type in “Carlo Sand Blow” as your destination. Google Maps will try to direct you down fire trails and rough tracks!

The right way:
✓ Type “Carlo Carpark” into Google Maps
✓ This gives accurate directions to the proper car park
✓ From there, take the easy 600m walking trail

6 Awesome Things to Do at Carlo Sand Blow

1. Slide Down the Dunes on Boogie Boards

This is THE activity! Bring boogie boards from home (or buy cheap ones in Rainbow Beach) and watch the magic happen.

Our kids absolutely loved racing down the enormous sand dunes on their boogie boards—both sitting up and lying down. They’d sprint to the top, slide down screaming with joy, then immediately run back up for another go. We literally couldn’t get them to stop!

Why boogie boards work brilliantly: They’re cheaper than sandboards, lighter to carry, and you might already own them.

2. Run Free on the Dunes

Our kids spent most of their time simply running up and down the sand dunes. The soft sand makes it hard work (brilliant for tiring out energetic little legs!), but they loved the challenge.

Parent bonus: This natural workout means they’ll sleep well that night!

3. Soak in the Views from the Platform

The wooden viewing platform gives you the full panorama of the amazing sand blow:

Perfect spot for the classic family photo, and drop the footwear before the kids scatter up the dunes!

4. Explore Toward the Cliffs

If you’re feeling adventurous, walk across the sand blow toward the water. Fair warning: it’s really tiring walking on the soft sand, but the views are worth it. You can’t get down to the water (steep cliffs), but the perspective is spectacular.

5. Join the Cooloola Great Walks

Carlo Sand Blow connects to the Cooloola Great Walks network. You can venture off on longer trails exploring this stunning coastal wilderness—perfect for families with older kids who love hiking.

6. Play and Build in the Sand

Even though the fine sand won’t build castles, kids find endless ways to play: digging holes, making sand angels, burying each other, creating patterns. Just embrace that everyone gets sandy—it’s part of the adventure!

The Rainforest Walk

Distance: 600m
Time: 10-15 minutes
Terrain: Mostly uphill going IN (downhill coming back when you’re tired—bonus!)
Footwear: Thongs or sandals work fine!

Keep eyes peeled for rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, butterflies, and lizards. Let younger kids lead as “trail guide” to keep them engaged.

Smart Planning Tips

Timing & Parking

Arrive early! There isn’t a lot of parking at the car park—first in, best dressed. Arrive late and you’ll park on the roadside down the hill. Early morning (before 9am) is best for comfortable sand temperature and parking.

The Toilet Situation

There are NO toilets at the car park or sand blow. Make sure everyone uses bathrooms in Rainbow Beach before leaving town!

What We Packed

  • Boogie boards – The star of the show!
  • Water – 1-2L per person (you’ll drink more than expected)
  • Pre-cut watermelon – Hydrating and refreshing
  • Other snacks – Muesli bars, crackers, dried fruit (nothing that melts)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ – Reapply every hour
  • Hats – Non-negotiable in Queensland sun
  • Wet wipes – For sticky hands
  • Change of clothes in the car – Everyone will be sandy!

How Long to Stay

Give yourself 2-3 hours minimum. Kids will want to keep going “just one more time!” and rushing them ruins the fun.

Safety Tips

  • Apply sunscreen before you start and reapply regularly
  • Offer water every 15-20 minutes (kids need it when active)
  • Watch edges near cliffs—keep young children close
  • The soft sand means falls don’t hurt—kids will tumble and laugh

The Bottom Line

Carlo Sand Blow exceeded our expectations. It’s free, spectacular, and gives kids freedom to run, play, and explore somewhere truly unique.

The real magic? Watching your kids slide down those enormous dunes on boogie boards, laughing their heads off, racing back up, and doing it all over again. Our kids literally spent hours just running up and down, and they still talk about it months later.

Planning your visit? Go early in the morning, bring boogie boards and plenty of water, use bathrooms before you leave town, and search “Carlo Carpark” in GPS. Then just let kids play and enjoy one of the Gympie region’s most memorable family adventures.
